It was a peaceful spring day.  Most of the small town was out and about their day like the one before.  Everything was as it should be with the farmers in the field, the shopkeepers in the main streets… and you at the piano.

You were the only daughter of the wealthiest family in town.  You lived in a mansion up on a hill with a long drive in the front and a garden in the back.  You were around 8 and a usually well-behaved child.  You had a staff of servants and maids to care for you, a few friends, but you hardly ever saw your parents since they were usually busy.  Still, you made the best of it.  You were a very bright artistic child who managed to see the good side of things no matter what.  In particular you were very skilled at the piano.

Still, it did get rather lonely sometimes.  You wished you had someone to play with.

As you finish your daily practice, you notice a squirrel on the windowsill looking at you and smile.  “It is a nice day,” you say to yourself, “Perhaps I should go outside…”

You slip on a pair of shoes as you head out the large front doors of your mansion.  You enjoy the sounds of your shoes clicking on the stone driveway.  You run down the hill with your arms stretched out, enjoying the feeling of pretending flight.  You skip through the town happily as people left and right waved hello to you and you’d always wave back – it’d be rude not to, wouldn’t it?

It was such a beautiful day…

… you didn’t even see the truck coming.

--

“You are a very lucky girl, young miss _________,” the kind doctor said, but you didn’t feel lucky.

You awoke in the hospital confused and in pain.  You were hit by an oncoming truck when you were crossing the road.  You suffered no fatal injuries… however, your spine and legs received severe damage.

“Chances are you’ll never walk again…”

No six words ever sounded so painful to you than those that were told to you by the doctor.  You’d be forever bound to a wheelchair for the rest of your life.  Never again would you be able to run through town or feel the sand between your toes whenever you went to the beach.  You couldn’t play with the other kids or swing on the swingset in your backyard.  You felt completely hearbroken.

You look up from your lap as you see your father come into the door of your bedroom one morning a few days after you returned from the hospital.

“Hello, _________,” he greeted you in a small voice, hoping to cheer you up.  His hands were behind his back.

“Hello, father,” you greeted him sadly.  Not even the sight of your own father could cheer you up.

“How are you feeling?” he asks as he walks over.

“Bad…” you sigh.

“I’m sorry… I really wish there was something I could do, believe me,” your father tries to console you, “But I got you something.”

“What’d you get?” you look up at him with curious eyes as he pulls out a box from behind his back.

“It’s something I’ve been meaning to get you for a while… I know your mother and I don’t get to see you very often these days, and I don’t want you to be alone in this house.”

You curiously set the box in your lap.  It had a small ribbon on it and was permeated with tiny holes.  You could feel something moving around inside.  You pull at the ribbon and let it come undone as you open the box.  To your surprise, a tiny puppy pops out of the box.  It had black and brown fur, a pair of folded ears, and a long snout.  Its bright blue eyes look up at you curiously.

“His name is Ludwig.”

--

You and Ludwig have been inseparable since the day you two met.  It’s been several years since that day and you were currently (age) years old.  Even today Ludwig has been by your side as your loyal pet.  The two of you would often go on walks outside whenever the weather was nice, although you never ventured too far from home since the accident, and if it was raining the two of you would remain huddled in the house.  He’d usually be beside you whenever when you’d play the piano and he usually managed to brighten your day.

Still, you were rather sad at being stuck in a wheelchair.  You’d wish often that you could run with him whenever the two of you were outside on a walk or playing fetch.  Still, you tried your best to see the bright side of it all.

One night, you’re suddenly woken up by something going on downstairs.  You sit up in your bed and rub your eyes.  Ludwig, who’s sleeping on the bed right next to you, perks his head up and looks at the door.  The crashing of ceramic and glass downstairs mixed with the sound of Ludwig growling at the door made you incredibly nervous.  It wasn’t until you hear your bedroom door slam open that your fears are confirmed.

“IN HERE!  SHE’S IN HERE!” someone yells.  Before you have time to react you feel someone grab you and carry you out over their shoulder.

“LET GO OF ME!” you yell as you pound into the man’s back with your fists.  You try to kick your legs but they don’t respond.  Ludwig pounces on the intruder, making him drop you to the floor.  You’re still seeing stars as you look up, watching as Ludwig attacks your assaulters.

“THE DOG YOU IDIOT!  TAKE CARE OF THE DOG!” the man yells as he defends himself from your precious pet.  You wince as you see one of them take out a long stick of some sort and smack Ludwig upside the head with it, knocking him to the side and out cold.

“LUDWIG!!” you cry out, feeling the intruder grab you up from the floor.  You try reaching out to your dog as you’re taken out of the room.  You feel them run you out of the house and toss you into the back of a garage.  The doors slam shut as you’re sealed into darkness, unable to move.  You cry as you hear the truck start and drive off into the night to God knows where.

--

It felt like hours before the doors of the truck finally open again.  You’re laying against the wall of the container as you see your captors drag you out.  You flop to the ground like a ragdoll as you fall from the truck. “Get up,” one of your abductors says to you, “I said get up!”

“I can’t!” you cry, “I can’t move my legs!”

“Augh, fine!” the man groaned as he lifts you up yet again.

“W-W-Why are you doing this to me!?”

“You’re going to be staying with us for a while,” the leader speaks to you, lifting your chin up so you’d be looking at him, “Once your daddy pays the money he owes us, you’ll be free to go…”

“Please don’t hurt me…” you wept.

“Oh, I’m afraid there’s no guarantee in that, but don’t worry.  You’ll see your precious doggy again soon…”

You look at him with bitter tears of anger and fear.  Why is all of this happening?

“LION!  LION!” someone suddenly yells, “THERE’S A PROBLEM!! AAAUUGH!”

Everyone turns their heads as you see something running up towards you.  You gasp, recognizing the beat as your dog.

“LUDWIG!” you call out to it, stretching out your arm to it.

“GET THE GIRL INSIDE!” the leader shoves you into the arms of another thug, “Leave the dog to me!”

“Gotcha!”

“NO! LUDWIG!!” you try calling out to your dog as you’re dragged into a shed.  Your tossed onto a cot and locked inside alone.  You manage to use your arms to turn yourself over onto the floor and crawl your way to a window.  You managed to lift yourself up onto your frozen knees as you look at the chaos outside.  Your precious Ludwig was defending himself from your abductors who are all well-armed.  You cringed and winced every time one of them hit your dog.  Eventually you couldn’t watch as you let go of the windowsill and drop to the floor.

Finally, you hear the sound of police sirens in the area.  You gasp as the door is kicked open and a SWAT team member comes inside and looks at you.

“Are you okay?” he asks.

You can only nod your head as some more come in.  You’re carried over to a police car as you remain silent in the back seat as you’re taken home.

“Where’s Ludwig? …” you asked the man driving.

“Who?”

“My dog.  Where is he? …” you ask again, “He tried to save me…”

The man didn’t answer.

You’re back in your bedroom some time later, lying in your bed and trying to go back to sleep.  However, the fear of the break in and what happened to your dog kept you awake.  You tossed and turned in bed, hoping that your precious companion was okay.

Finally, you hear your door being opened again.  You sit up and gasp as you pull the covers up to your face, seeing someone – or something – stumble into the room.  You pick up a flashlight beside your bed and turn it on, shining it on the new intruder.  The man is tall and muscular in structure, his body battered and bruised like he were in some sort of fight.  He had blonde, disheveled hair that slightly covered his eyes.  You try to back away, but find yourself unable to as he makes his way to your bed.  He falls to his knees beside you and looks up at you, his hands on the mattress.

“My lady… are you okay?” he speaks to you in a deep, Germanic voice.  In the light of the flashlight you held, you finally notice his eyes… and your own widen in shock.  His sky-blue eyes are far too familiar to you for it to be a coincidence.

“L… Ludwig?” your hands shook as tears form in your eyes.

“Yes, it’s me…”

“B… But how!?”

“I don’t know, to be honest… it’s okay, _________,” he assures you, placing a hand on your shoulder, “I’ll be fine…”

Your eyes welling up, you throw your arms around him and cry into his shoulder.  “Oh thank goodness you’re okay!”  You feel Ludwig hug you back caringly and rubbing your back reassuringly.  “I was so worried!”

Ludwig crawled his way into the bed with you, keeping you in his embrace as you snuggle close to him.  “Don’t worry me like that again… okay?” you say.

“Okay… I promise…”

The two of you remain in each other’s arms as the sun began to rise out your window.

--

“AUGH!”

“Hold still!”

The very next morning, the doctor was called to your house.  The town doctor was a kind man and the son of the man who treated you when you were paralyzed in that accident.  Still, he was rather stern, particularly when he saw Ludwig.  He first treated you and made sure you had no serious injuries.  Thankfully you weren’t too injured aside from a few bruises.  Ludwig wasn’t quite as lucky as he was severely beaten by the people who kidnapped you.  His wounds were wrapped up in gauze and bandages and his bruises were covered to allow them to heal.  The doctor didn’t ask where he came from, thankfully, and you knew that Ludwig’s presence wouldn’t go unnoticed by the town.  News tended to get around rather quick since your town was so small.  Once his business was done, the doctor left.  You and Ludwig remained in your bedroom together alone.

“How do you feel?” you ask.

“Ugh… in a little pain, but otherwise fine,” Ludwig answered, “It’ll heal.”

“I mean… how do you feel about suddenly being human?”

“Honestly it’s… rather strange,” he answers, “It’ll be weird getting used to this new body, but I’ll manage somehow… though I guess I should be looking for someplace to stay…”

“Y-You’re more than welcome to stay here, Ludwig!”

“Are you sure your parents wouldn’t mind?”

“They’ll be confused at first,” you answer, “But if having you around makes me happy, they’ll let you stay.” You give Ludwig a warm, loving hug.  Ludwig freezes a bit at first, but his arms slowly wrap around yours as he lifts you into his lap.

“Thank you, Lady _________,” Ludwig thanks you.

“Anything for you, Ludwig,” you answer with a small smile, “So what do you want to do today to celebrate?  It’s a nice day and…”

Your sentence is interrupted by a small snore.

“Ludwig???” you look up at Ludwig.  His eyes were closed and his body went limp.  His chest bobbed up and down with each breath he took and he was snoring lightly.  You couldn’t help but crack a small smile and emit a soft giggle.  You almost forgot: the two of you were so caught up in the whole ordeal of you being kidnapped and rescued and Ludwig coming to save you the two of you hadn’t even gotten much sleep last night.  He must’ve been exhausted, poor thing!  You lift your head up to give Ludwig a small peck on the cheek, watching his lips curl into a thin smile unconsciously as he hugs you slightly in his sleep.  Your eyelids felt rather heavy as you relaxed in his lap, resting your head against his chest as you let out a yawn.  Ludwig had the right idea – you both were terribly tired after that big adventure.  You let your eyes close as you drift to sleep, joining Ludwig in dreamland.
